(Pre) Easter Luncheon

Since we'll be gone on Easter, Mutti got an invitation to come a bit earlier for a lunch.  She accepted! No surprise there - we're pretty good cooks, and besides that, it's so nice to have someone cook for you now and again.  I have to admit that I'm on the receiving end of that treat at least a couple of times a week.

It is the season for lamb and it's not something Mutti will ever cook for herself - too much work for one and too much food for one.  So we did the work and helped her eat it.

The table was set with our "heritage" porcelain and lovely spring flowers.  The lilacs have just started blooming and fill the air with such sweetness.

First course: Creamed kohlrabi soup with smoked shrimp.  I have to say, I've had shrimp all kinds of ways, but smoked was something new.  The soup itself is rather mild so the smokey shrimp is a nice contrast.

Next, lambs' leaf salad with fried goat cheese and a garnish of violets.  Mutti took not one but two looks at this and said "Am I supposed to eat that?" and the answer was "Yes, you can, but you don't have to!"  But we all did.

And the main course:  braised lamb shanks, rosemary roasted potatoes and princess beans.   The shanks had been started the day before, spend several saucy sweet hours in the oven and were gently rewarmed the next day.  Tender can aptly describe the results!!!

I know Mutti looks a bit skeptical, but that's because she really really dislikes the camera and tries to hide every every time I bring it out. But believe me, she enjoyed the meal just as much as Werner, who is not shy about smiling into the camera.

I love a man who enjoys his meal!

After a nap (Mutti told me once that she has taken a nap every day of her life - maybe a secret to old age??) we had chocolate mousse with vanilla cream sauce and fresh strawberries.  Coffee on the side and sunshine everywhere.

Happy Easter everyone!
