Training - a bike trip from Verden to Achim and back

We've made our reservations. End of August we'll be heading to the Baltic Sea and 6 days of biking there. Are we prepared? Not even. Between sluggishness and age and other interferences, we need to get up to speed for our trip, so today, off we went.

Picnic prep is prime, so last night I made lemon chicken from the Silver Palate Cookbook. It is definitely yummy and I need to remember to do that again! I had a couple of tart shells sitting in the fridge waiting for something, so they turned into spinach tarts. Tomatoes and mozzarella and basil in olive oil rounded out our lunch menu.

We lazily left home at 10:30 and took the train to Verden, an hour away, to bike around there. Verden to Achim and back.

It was kinda warm today - 29°C, about 85°F, sunny with a bit of breeze, but OK.

We've been to that region several times, but it's been a while. Besides, I forget, so it looks new to me.

The idea was to go along the Weser as much as possible, but it's less possible than we'd like. But Here She Is, our Weser.

It's summer and the growing season is transitioning to the harvesting season. These fields of wheat will be cut soon.

Time for lunch!!! We stopped at Schloss Etelsen. We've done it before, too, but in the meantime the Schloss has been transformed to a lovely event site with pretty gardens. A wedding was going on while we enjoyed our lunch.

Here you can see my arms, which are exposed perhaps once every five years!

Heading back to Verden, we biked through a lot of fields. The corn and the blue, blue sky and white fluffy clouds were emblematic of the day.

We huffed and puffed and finally made it back to the starting point and thoroughly enjoyed a "Radler" - beer mixed with bubbly lemon water. Very refreshing.

Seven hours later, (two on the train), and 45 K (28 miles). I couldn't get in the shower fast enough! But a great day.

We need more training....
