The old one had to go. It must have been made before 2007 since I have no digital photo of it. There were matching seat covers on the kitchen chairs that we gave away 6 or so years ago, and I still have a couple of egg cozies with the roosters on them. It had been washed and held up well, but, really, it was time to go.
I'd bought some fabric last year at an antique store, an old duvet cover of cotton and linen. Perfect.
Of course it's never as easy as it looks. The regular plaid wasn't soooo regular. (It is hard for me to tell if it was hand woven or not. It may have been, but of course over the years things get a little out of shape. Just look at me!!)
In those days, fabrics were only as wide as the loom, and most home looms didn't do much over a meter wide. So it had to be pieced. And it needed to be lined. And all the tapes sewed in place. I'd planned to have it done for Thanksgiving, but that didn't work out, so it got done before Christmas.
The topper is an antique piece, probably meant to go on an upright piano or maybe a buffet. It's just hanging there - no need to sew it down and put even more holes in the fabric.
We like Roman shades - down for a bit of privacy and way out of the way for more light. This time of year, light is a precious commodity. But in two more days, after the longest night, the days will get longer!
