... fun, fantastic, fabulous ... OK, my alliteration fetish. Forgive me.
The last two weekends have been amazingly bright and sunny and clear - and cooler! A lot! This morning, it was under 40° when we got up and the predicted high was only 50°. Winter is coming.
On the other hand, we have these days to enjoy the leaves, take brisk walks - or walks in the brisk air - and cook some special seasonal dishes. We're doing it all.
We went to the market with no preconceived idea of dinner - let's see what they've got. It is wild mushroom season, and one of the little stands there - a guy even older than us - had his eggs and pumpkins and giant zucchini and wild mushrooms he'd gathered himself. A leap of faith perhaps, trusting someone to sell wild mushrooms that wouldn't kill you, but since he's been doing it for most of his life and gave us stories and names about all the mushrooms, we decided it would be OK. (Obviously, it was.)
And then to go move We decided it was too windy-cool for a bike ride, so we took the bus to Lesum and walked back home along the river. I am not sure we've ever done that, because it was a lot longer walk than I thought!!
But it was good.
At the start, we paid homage to Duchess Emma of Lesum who donated some of her land for the city park in Bremen. As you can tell from her dress, that was a few hundred years ago.
Then we paid homage to the boats and the river. The boats won't be there much longer - they're already hauling them out for the winter.
And I picked up a leaf or two (and more). They're getting pressed for later use.
And then we had our dinner! The assorted wild mushrooms, mixed with some bacon and cream and arranged over some SpƤtzle, crispy salad on the side. Life is good. Mushrooms are ugly.
Next day, there was a classic car show in the area, so we had to go. I expected to see a Porsche and Werner expected to see some US cars. We were not disappointed.
Then we found a stand selling fries - fresh spiral-cut potatoes on a stick. Well, I had to try them - and then had to fight Werner for my fair share! Good stuff.
