When we take bike trips, it's usually from the house or with the train and bikes. Today, we took the bikes on the car.
It goes against the grain a bit, taking the bikes on the car to take a bike trip. But sometimes you want to get somewhere that the train won't take you without lots of extra hours, because it's a lot of on-and-off, or you just want to have a little convenience. We opted for convenience today, so we loaded the bikes and off we went to the Steinhuder Meer.
North of Hannover, it's about a 1 1/2 hour drive from here. Werner has recently bought new bike carriers for the car, and we hadn't yet tried them out, so it was about time. And, man! I have to say, these are really great! So much easier and faster. Wow.
And here we are, underway, with the shadow of our secure bikes on the top of the car.
The lake is a huge attraction for all of north Germany. There's a bike/walking path around the entire lake, some areas are birch forests. When the sun came through, it was truly enchanting.
Some of the region is public and some restricted for a nature preserve. Previously, it was heavily farmed for peat. That is so not PC these days - peat is, like oil, irreplaceable, needing a couple of 10s of 1000s of years to regenerate. Today, the former peat fields are left to the heather. It's just starting to bloom and oh-so-lovely.
The public areas are ample - room for boats and sailboarders and kiteboarders. Is that what they are? These guys - and a few gals - have more courage than I.
Along the way there are walkways to the water, and this one was especially lovely.
Thirty K later, we arrived back at the starting point. And lucky Werner, a vintage car show of English autos was there, and a Rover! Oh, be still my heart (he said). I drooled over the Triumphs and the MGs, and then, well, you have to have coffee and cake.
On the way back, we delivered a new outdoor chair to Mutti in the hope that there will be a few more sunny days that she can enjoy on her balcony. We can hope!
