Third Advent

The poinsettia is struggling. You can't really see it in this picture, but all - ALL - the green leaves dried up and fell off Tuesday. The red still looks pretty good, but I don't have high hopes for this thing making it to next Sunday! I remembered that last year I had a miniature holly. They're sturdier.

It's getting harder to keep to a normal diet, a diet within shouting range of calories one can reasonably expect to burn in a day. Monday night was the annual Christmas party with the English group. Lots of homemade cookies including some confection of sugar and almonds - imagine chewy peanut brittle German style. Bacon wrapped dates. Mulled wine. Candle light. Christmas carols. It's always very nice and leaves us with a warm Christmasy feeling. Thursday there was Kaffee und Kuchen here with my regular Thursday group. Then we celebrated the first day of Chanukkah with friends and - ta da - Kaffee und Kuchen. Today, neighbors are coming for - you guessed it. There's still next week to deal with, then a slight respite.

Tuesday Werner went to his last stone sculpting class before the holiday break and brought home the piece he's currently working on. The sandstone was at the entrance to the terrace in the back and it seemed to ask for something on it and wouldn't you know, a pelican came to mind. Who'da thunk it? It's not quite finished - there are still details to put in - but I am impressed. Then again, Werner is The Artist, as Hunter and Hannah like to say. The negative is it can't go back in its original place in the walkway; ice and water would likely crack it. Now to find another place to display it ...
