Old Chair - New Chair
There's an auction house here that will sell the things you inherited - or have but don't want - that are better than flea market but maybe not quite good enough for the high-end antique dealers. The folks who run the place are anything but pretentious and it's comfortable to be there.
We go look when they have their auction preview and sometimes leave a bid and sometimes not and sometimes get something and sometimes not. It's a good deal for folks like us who don't feel comfortable getting caught up in the bidding itself - we leave a written high bid and that's it. Maybe someday we'll go to the auction to experience it, but then again, maybe not ...
There's ALWAYS something weird or interesting or appealing and you just have to decide if you really want it and, if you do, what you're willing to pay. This time, we (read: I) bid on a chair. For a while we actually needed more chairs, but now we're pretty much at the saturation point. Werner was not really happy about bidding on this piece, but it had a needlepoint cover and I just was sucked right in. And, dear Werner, he indulges me.
The auction itself is on Saturday; Monday a letter arrives if you got something. We got a letter Monday. We won. Oh dear!
I wasn't even sure what it was exactly, this chair, but now we know it is a nursing chair, English, walnut, late 19th century, Victorian, probably Renaissance Revival. That's more than I want to know about antiques, actually. And can you even believe that I like this Victorian stuff?
Of course the innards need re-doing but we have some experience with that. The needlepoint is in great shape for its age - needs serious cleaning and some repair, but that will be fun to do.
The chair has a nice feeling and I hope there were some happy moments spent in it. Maybe a few more nice moments to come.
Now the question is: where are we going to put it? And is that my Christmas present?
