Our friend Hartmut needed a hat for a performance. A straw hat. He borrowed Werner's boater for a gig - he's in a Samba group - but he wanted his own hat.
"Where'd you get that?" he asked.
"The Strohmuseum (Straw Museum) in Twistwringen, of course!"
"What? A Straw Museum? Must have been expensive."
"No. 15 euro. Max."
"OK. Let's go."
So, since we all like biking, we planned a trip to Twistringen. It's not as easy as you think. First of all, the weather has been very weathery. Showers and thunderstorms have been part of our days these days. And the museum has very limited hours since it is managed by volunteers - it didn't even open till 3:oo in the afternoon. The plan: leave early, take the train to Point A, bike about 30K from Point A to Point B, tour the museum, take the train from Point B to Point A. Yeah, the plans that never go according to plan.
We left at 9:30 and arrived in Vechta around 11:30, so time for a coffee before heading out.
This field hasn't yet been harvested. It's barley, essential for beer!
We have to stop now and again to check out where we're headed. But the signs are really, really good!
After a few detours (Werner and I are not the only ones who find maps a bit hard to deal with!) we arrive at the Straw Museum. And here some real honest to goodness straws.
Local folks used to cut them in their homes, sent them back to the factory where they were packaged and sent all over the world, from Twistringen. Wow.Recently, the museum acquired a collection from a man who had bought various straw items from all over Europe. Wow.
It was time again for a cup of coffee, so we headed to the main street where, lo and behold, several Schutzen Vereine (Shooting Clubs) had gathered for the annual crowning of the King and they had a couple of marching bands to boot. These clubs are a staple in smaller towns and it is a BIG DEAL.
Then we headed home and thought, Well, it's late, let's have dinner at a restaurant. We hardly ever do that, but, why not! Something uncomplicated with a nice view.
